Connecting @ Calderwood: A Community Marked by Love
One of the most distinctive things about Calderwood isn’t something you’ll find on a timetable or in a classroom—it’s something you experience. It’s in the conversations at pick-up, the way families welcome one another, and the genuine care shown across our community.
In John 13:35, Jesus speaks about how His followers would be recognised: not by status, achievement, or even words—but by love. That kind of love is simple, visible, and deeply relational. It is expressed in everyday moments, in how we treat one another, and in whether people feel known when they are among us.
This is what we want Calderwood to be known for.
As our school grows, there is always a risk that connection becomes harder and people feel less visible. That’s why we continue to place such a strong emphasis on building relationships. The “small school feel” that many families value is not really about size—it’s about whether people feel seen, welcomed, and part of something meaningful. It’s about whether, in a busy week, someone takes the time to say hello, to listen, or to include others.
That kind of culture doesn’t just happen. It is built, step by step, through everyday choices.
For some families, that might mean being highly involved—volunteering, attending events, or contributing regularly to school life. For others, it may be as simple as lingering a little longer after school, introducing yourself to someone new, or showing up occasionally to connect. Both matter. Love is not measured by how much you do, but by the spirit in which you do it.
We are grateful that there are structured opportunities that make connection easier. In the coming weeks, there are several invitations worth considering:
P&F Meeting – Monday 1 June
These gatherings are one of the simplest ways to step into the life of the community. More than agendas and planning, they are about partnership—families coming together to support the culture and experience of the school.
Calderwood Business Network Breakfast – Thursday 18 June
For those in business or leadership spaces, this is a meaningful opportunity to connect, be encouraged, and build relationships that extend beyond the school gates.
Prep Parent Network – Tuesday 18 August
Particularly for newer families, this is a space where early connections are formed—connections that often shape a family’s entire experience of school life.
Yet it’s important to say that connection at Calderwood is not confined to organised events. Some of the most significant moments are unplanned; conversations on the sidelines, shared stories between parents, or the quiet support offered during a challenging season. These are the moments where community becomes real.
In many ways, this is where the words of Jesus become visible among us. When families experience genuine care, when people feel known rather than overlooked, when kindness is extended without expectation—these are the things that set a community apart. Not dramatically, but consistently.
So the encouragement is simple: take a step towards connection. Come along to something. Stay a little longer. Introduce yourself. Be intentional about noticing others.
Because when love is lived out in these small, everyday ways, something powerful happens. Our community becomes more than a school—it becomes a place of belonging.
And that is what will continue to shape Calderwood into the kind of community we believe God is calling us to be.
