Understanding School Funding: A Partnership in Christian Education

Mr Darren Hutton - Principal
Mr Darren Hutton - Principal

One of the great strengths of Calderwood Christian School is the partnership that exists between school and home. Long before it is expressed through fees, fundraising or volunteering, that partnership is seen in shared values, mutual trust, a commitment to Christian education, and a desire to see young people flourish in God's world.

From time to time, families ask how independent schools are funded and how school fees are spent. These are important questions, particularly as we continue to steward the resources God has entrusted to us and invest in the future of our school community.

How Independent Schools Are Funded

Independent schools in NSW operate through a partnership between governments, families and school communities. Government funding is determined through the Schooling Resource Standard (SRS), with funding levels adjusted according to the income profile of a school's parent community. As a result, independent schools rely on a combination of government funding and parent contributions to provide the educational programs, staffing, facilities and opportunities that families value.

At Calderwood, government grants currently provide approximately 76% of our recurrent income, without which we could not operate our beautiful school. Parent fees contribute approximately 24%. While these figures are important, they tell only part of the story. The contribution made by our families extends well beyond finances. Whether through prayer, volunteering, fundraising, supporting events, serving on committees, coaching sporting teams, assisting with reading groups, or simply reinforcing learning and Christian values at home, parents are genuine partners in the education of their children.

Where our Resources are Invested

When it comes to expenditure, the overwhelming majority of our resources are invested in people. 80% of our operating costs are directed towards staffing, including teachers, support staff, professional learning, superannuation and associated employment costs. This reflects our conviction that the quality of a school is ultimately found in the people who teach, encourage, mentor and care for students each day.

The remaining expenditure supports the many systems, resources and facilities required for a flourishing school. This includes technology, administration, insurance, utilities, maintenance, grounds, educational programs and student support services. These investments help ensure that students learn in an environment that is safe, well-resourced and conducive to learning.

Investing in the Future

Parent partnership also helps us look beyond the immediate needs of today and invest in the future.

While our property remains modest compared with many schools, we are delighted to be undertaking several significant projects this year. These include the construction of new Secondary School toilets and the conversion of the existing amenities block into two additional classrooms, creating valuable learning spaces for our growing Secondary School community.

We are also excited to commence Stage One of our new Junior School playground. More than simply a place for recreation, this space is being designed to foster curiosity, creativity, collaboration and discovery, reflecting our belief that children learn not only in classrooms but also through exploration, imagination and play.

Even more exciting is the vision beyond this first stage. At Grandparents' Day, we will unveil plans for a uniquely Calderwood discovery playground and learning precinct that will extend from Reception all the way to the front fence. It is an ambitious vision for a place where wonder, adventure, learning and creativity intersect in ways that are unmatched in the Illawarra.

It is important to note that only Stage One of this project has been funded at this time. That first stage has been made possible through a wonderful collaboration between the school's own resources and the dedicated fundraising efforts of the Calderwood Parents & Friends. The larger vision will depend on the ongoing commitment of our Parents & Friends Committee, the generosity of our families, and the support of local industry partners who share our desire to create something truly remarkable for our students.

A True Community Partnership

This project is a fitting example of what partnership looks like in a Christian school community. Partnership is not merely financial. It is parents, staff, volunteers, donors and community members working together towards a shared vision for the education and formation of young people. Every contribution, whether through prayer, volunteering, fundraising, expertise, advocacy or financial support, helps create opportunities that would not otherwise be possible.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to every family who partners with us. Thank you for the trust you place in our staff, the sacrifices you make to provide Christian education for your children, and the many ways you contribute to the life of our school. Your partnership is valued, your support is appreciated, and your investment is making a lasting difference. Together, we are building far more than classrooms and playgrounds. We are cultivating a Christ-centred community where young people are known, nurtured and equipped to serve God and others for generations to come.

Fellowship, Faith and Fun: Stage 3 Camp Wrap-Up

Our Stage 3 students recently returned from camp bursting with stories, laughter, and new bonds forged around the campfire — read on for a look back at an unforgettable few days away.

Stage 3 Camp - what an incredible few days!

Our Stage 3 students just returned from camp bursting with stories, laughter, and new bonds forged around the campfire! Beyond the adventure and adrenaline, this camp was about something deeper - growing in fellowship, strengthening faith, and building character that will carry them long into their futures.

From team challenges to quiet moments of Time Alone With God, our students showed courage and kindness. Proud doesn't even begin to cover it.

Camp is always a highlight of the Stage 3 calendar, and this year was no exception. Students stepped outside their comfort zones, tackled physical and mental challenges together, and discovered new strengths in themselves and their classmates. Whether it was navigating a high ropes course, working as a team to solve group challenges, or simply sharing a laugh over a meal in the dining hall, these shared experiences helped forge friendships that will last well beyond their years at Calderwood.

A Symphony of Stories: Calderwood Celebrates Book Week 2026

It was a glorious day as we celebrated reading and our Book Week theme, "Symphony of Stories," with both Junior and Secondary School joining in the fun across the whole school.

Book Week Dress Up Day

Junior School: A Symphony of Stories

During our Book Week Assembly, Stage 2 shared how the many stories of the Bible come together as one grand story of God's love and rescue plan, with God as the ultimate orchestrator of them all.

For the parade, each of the stage teachers selected a book, dressed as favourite characters, and chose music to match their story. Students proudly paraded in their creative costumes, cheered on by peers, staff, and the many parents and carers who joined us for the celebration. The atmosphere was filled with fun, excitement, and a love of reading.

A special highlight of the day was seeing our Kindergarten and Stage 1 students enjoying stories read by Year 11 and 12 students, creating precious memories and celebrating the joy of sharing books together.

Thank you to our students, staff, and families for making Book Week such a wonderful celebration of stories, imagination, and community.

Secondary School: Playing Their Part in the Symphony

Secondary celebrated Book Week by getting dressed up as some of their favourite characters across a Symphony of Stories - this year's theme.

Throughout the week, students considered the symphony of God's word and how all parts of it play an instrument in God's big plan of redemption.

The students engaged with reading and celebrated each other's writing in various games and activities, including a flash fiction competition, and the Stage 6 students reading some of their favourite childhood books with Stage 1.

Something Special: A Book Week Performance

Junior School students enjoyed the live interactive performance Something Special by Perform Education. Inspired by the CBCA shortlisted books Dawn, A Loo of One's Own, and Dear Broccoli, the show combined reading, music, and song in a fun and engaging way. Students learned valuable lessons about listening to others, sharing ideas, and working together as a team.

Creative and Performing Arts

Secondary students shine at the Creative Arts Showcase

Our Creative Arts Showcase was a vibrant display of the gifts of our Secondary students, as our school community came together to celebrate our 2026 Creative Arts Showcase!

Our Secondary students had the opportunity to showcase their skills in music, drama, dance and visual art across the evening, giving families a chance to see the work they have been putting together throughout the term. It was great to see students from Years 7 to 12 getting involved, whether performing on stage, exhibiting artwork, or supporting behind the scenes.

This year's Showcase was the best attended in the school's history, with around 240 people coming along to support our students and enjoy the evening.

The showcase gave our community a chance to see firsthand the range of creative subjects on offer at Calderwood and the effort our students and staff put into preparing for the night.

A big thanks to everyone who joined us, and to the students and staff who worked hard to put the evening together.
