Year 9 soaks in the sights and sounds of the nation's capital

Year 9 soaks in the sights and sounds of the nation's capital

Students in Year 9 recently travelled to our national capital, Canberra, on an education tour.

Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Students had the opportunity to enjoy the many activities that Canberra offers and were able to reflect on their position and role in society, the country, and the wider world.

During two days in Canberra, students and teachers visited the National Museum, Questacon, the National Zoo and Aquarium, the National Electoral Education Centre (NEEC), the National Arboretum, the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the Botanic Gardens, the Mint, Parliament House, and the Australian War Memorial. We stayed overnight at Alivio Tourist Park.

We were also able to consider our unique perspective as Christians at many of the venues we visited. We were left in awe of God’s creativity and at just how big His world is and the many ways that the Gospel can be reflected in and through our lives.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist the school, and therefore families, in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Thank you to Mrs Gold, Mr Leslie, and Mr Schaefer for accompanying the students and me on this wonderful camp. Thank you also to Mr Hawke, one of our wonderful parents, who drove our 30-seater bus for us.

Miss Amy Roberts
