Community Helpers

Community Helpers

During Term 2, Prep educators sent out a request for family members to visit Prep to talk to the children about their jobs and how they help people. We were overwhelmed with the offers from many of our families and began planning our first Community Helper Week in Prep for the end of the term. The week-long event gave the children an early start on thinking about possible future careers.

The children were encouraged to think about what they wanted to be when they grow up and dress up like that occupation. Prep educators also joined in on the fun by dressing up as doctors and nurses for Medical Monday, workers on Worker Wednesday, and farmers on Farmer Friday.

Throughout the week our Prep students:

  • Visited the library and the librarian
  • Explored an ambulance with our paramedic parents
  • Discovered how cranes are used on construction sites
  • Learned about visiting the dentist and caring for our teeth with our dental nurse
  • Investigated some equipment brought in by nurses from Shellharbour ED, and listened to a story about going to hospital
  • Participated in a basketball coaching session with an Illawarra Hawks player
  • Dressed up in police hats and vests before looking at the police car with our police officers
  • Discussed fire safety and used the fire hoses with the Rural Fire Service

We are thankful to God for providing us with so many different people to help us in our daily lives and are thankful to the Prep family community (both past and present) for volunteering their time to provide amazing experiences for the children and educators throughout the week.
