Former Calderwood student Georgia selected for an international culinary scholarship!

Ex-Calderwood student Georgia Manganas (Year 10, 2021) recently celebrated an incredible achievement, receiving a highly sought-after international culinary scholarship after she was named the winner of Fonterra's 2024 "Proud to be a Chef" award!

Georgia last attended Calderwood as a Year 10 student in 2021, leaving to commence an apprenticeship at the Shellharbour Club.

Entering the third year of her apprenticeship in 2024, Georgia was selected as a finalist in the program, one of just 32 apprentice chefs from around Australia.

The program, which took place in Melbourne over four days at the beginning of February, saw Georgia and the other finalists take part in numerous cooking masterclasses and workshops, as well as dining at prominent restaurants as part of the experience.

Georgia received high praise from the judges, commended as a 'quiet achiever' within the group, but the participant who, according to her mentors, improved the most during the program.

"She was incredibly engaged, always the first to put her hand up and we could see her quietly observing and taking everything in her stride," said Mark Nomoyle, Proud to be a Chef resident mentor and Anchor Food Professionals Executive Chef.

"It’s exciting to see the new opportunities that will open for Georgia, now that she has the confidence to pursue them."

Georgia reflected on her education at Calderwood as a contributor to her passion for cooking, stating that her Food Technology teachers "helped to push me a bit, to get more knowledge and continue and take this further".

Calderwood Learning Support Aide Mrs Karen Royters reflected similarly on Georgia's cooking expertise – that Georgia "loved Food Tech and was a very capable student in this subject."

As the prize for being named the winner of the competition, Georgia receives a highly sought-after international culinary scholarship which is tailored to help support her aspirations as a chef.

Well done, Georgia, on achieving this incredible accomplishment!
